Rarity/Spitfire Update by adamlhumphreys Rarity/Spitfire Update by adamlhumphreys
I have been working… with minky! The Rarity with Spitfire’s mane/tail is a customized with eyes 1/4 closed, subtle nose, et al.; the second without the head sewn on is another customized with eyes half closed. And of course Spitfire is a trade. [EDIT: The custom Rarity and Spitfire are different plushies. I just pinned on Spitfire’s mane/tail to show my progress on it. ^^; But if someone wanted a Rarity with a Spitfire mane/tail, that’s okay too. :D]

First WIP pic:
[link]

I won’t do any trades again anytime soon. [There is another one planned with :iconspacevoyager: though when she has time available, which I understand. :icontrixielaplz: I hope to improve a lot before then! :eager:] I want to get on Applejack as soon as these are finished. :D Pinkie Pie and the custom pin cushions are mine. :XD:

Any thoughts and feedback are much appreciated, but keep in mind thing are still very much under development. :)

Thank you! I guess they're not too bad despite being a little dated. ^^ I did them with just a zig-zag stitch, but now I needle sculpt them:

Is the horn part of the head in the same pece or separate?

I'm just getting into making plushies and this is the part I get confused on.

Btw I love that Luna!

The horn is made form one piece and hand sewn on separately. The same thread I sculpt it with is also used to sew it on, (after being secured though).

Cool, and thank you! :aww:

The technical term is "needle sculpting," but thread is what does the actual sculpting. ^^

I used SophieSew and made a tutorial for it here [link] . I should probably update it eventually, but I want version 2 to release first. I also used the Brother SE-400.

Ok thank you for the reassuring words >.< At the moment I went to painting because I'm not happy with the embroidery ^^'
Well but one last thing do you embroider the eyes directly on the fabric or use some extra fabric and then stitch it together? (hope you know what I mean >.<)

I painted my first Pinkie Pie’s eyes, but I’m not big on painting and wanted a more consistent look. ^^; The vinyl eyes on the larger store bought pony plushies even don’t look too bad. But yes, I embroider directly on the fabric.

oh ok oo
So.. you really embroider it directly when it#s already stuffed and all? Because I can't imagine how you did this at the moment >.< and I'm sorry to aks so much because you wrote on your profile that one should figure it out oneself ут

Haha :D No, that’s impossible. Embroidery is never done that way that I know of. It’s the first step before cutting out the fabric. :)

They all look lovely! <3 I am curious, though: do you hand-sew their manes on? I see a lot of WIPs where the whole plush is sewn together and stuffed, but no manes or tails attached D:

Thank you! :aww: And yes, their manes and tails are hand sewn on. I also actually offer them without manes or tails too because they’re easiest to cuddle that way IMO. :meow:

Interesting... how do you sew them on? Just a ladder stitch? Also, they WOULD be more cuddly that way, wouldn't they? :aww: I may have to see for myself with my own plushies sometime! :D

Yup, just a ladder stitch. That’s how I plan to leave my own Pinkie. :D But on some ponies the mane may not matter too much, but their tails can really get in the way. I just left the wire out of my Rarity when sewing on her mane/tail and just sewed parts to get the shape.

Sounds awesome :D
Also, a wireless Rarity would be so squishy and cuddly! :aww: Although sewing her tail's shape probably isn't too easy :)

She is! :aww: And the sewing isn’t too bad, but wire just makes it so much easier and versatile. I sleep with another one also that does have wire. :meow:

Oh wow! That is a long time. :O I guess it’s a good thing I’m taking my time. :D
I have a question though. Would you mind if I used my embroidery design for the eye? The only reason why I’m asking is because I want it to be the same density as the rest of my plushies. But if you want me to use your design for your Spitfire, then that’s okay too! I’m just curious, please don’t be offended! :iconapplejackfillysad:

I do very much appreciate the designs, and the cutiemark turned out awesome! :D I just modified Twilight’s eye a little so it was no biggie, plus I do plan to sell one and figured I’s do some part of the embroidery. ^^

I'm not sure, but isn't Spitfire's eye different from Twilight's?
Wouldn't mind if you would use my designs for some plushies you plan to sell ;)

Only in that Spitfire’s eyes are usually half shut with the eyelid shadow (or eyelid highlight since what appears to be shadow is actually the same exact color as her fur.) When her eyes are open, only the color is different from Twilight’s. I really tried to get the colors right and think I found a good balance.

Her body is in progress! :D I hope you love her lots! :aww:

Eenope. Completely separate pieces of fabric. But they also took about 11 hours to complete. ^^;
But now that I have those sharp angles down though, I’m looking to get more back leg definition.

I always thought it was impossible to sew something that forms a triangle with right sides together.

Ohh. :O I thought that's what you did on Applejack. (And I suspect that's what :iconhystree: did on Rarity.)
Well, I will say it is impossible with ultra cuddle, but minky has been a real game changer for me.

i think i'm thinking about it a bit differently, when i make tails with 2 colors i print out the tail to scale, cut it along the line that connects the two colors and add seam allowances. i have a hard time picturing how i would fit together the triangles that would form since one would be jutted out like > and the other would be like < when placed together.. maybe i'm thinking too deeply into it and should try it >o< when i did applejack's leg it was a triangle sewn onto a straight seam which is possible, but the shape that's popping up in my mind is a bit different for tails with triangles in them
